ISKANDAR PUTERI BLUE CARBON INITIATIVE: PROTECTING NATURE FOR CLIMATE SUSTAINABILITY
July 14, 2025 I Sea Swordsman Jetty, Pendas Laut VillageThe Blue Carbon Iskandar Puteri initiative is a manifestation of the commitment of the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) in addressing the challenges of climate change through the preservation and restoration of coastal ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows (seagrasses), mangrove swamp forests and wetland areas. This ecosystem is identified as one of the most efficient natural carbon absorbers in the world, with carbon absorption capabilities up to 35 times higher than tropical rainforests.
Through strategic collaboration with Iskandar Puteri Regional Committee (IPRC) which includes IRDA, JPNJ, UTM, SWM, Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, Biocon Sdn. Bhd. and the Natural Club, MBIP has organized an Ecological Visit to the Seaweed Field as part of efforts to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of this ecosystem. The program involving 25 participants was carried out in the 'intertidal' area of one of the largest seagrass meadows in Malaysia, starting with a safety briefing and ecosystem introduction at the Sea Swordsman Jetty before the participants were taken on a boat to the study location. Throughout the activity, participants were given the task of identifying species, observing marine biodiversity and understanding the function of habitats as a source of food and protection for various marine life such as fish, crabs and dugongs.
MBIP is committed to continuing to strengthen this Blue Carbon initiative through an integrated and collaborative approach across sectors, in line with sustainable development goals (SDG) and the environmental conservation agenda.
