The city of Iskandar Puteri has officially been accepted into the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) together with 72 cities from 46 countries on 4th December 2025, an international network that brings together cities committed to promoting lifelong learning, community development, and inclusive social progress. Iskandar Puteri is the second city in Malaysia and the first Local Authority in the state of Johor to become a member of the UNESCO GNLC.

This membership is an achievement that reflects the city’s continuous efforts to serve as a lifelong learning hub, fostering a holistic, sustainable, and accessible learning environment for all segments of society. As a member of the UNESCO GNLC, Iskandar Puteri is now part of a global network comprising hundreds of learning cities worldwide. This membership enables the city to:

1. Gain access to UNESCO’s expertise and guidance in formulating policies, programmes, and strategies for lifelong learning.

2. Share best practices in education, digitalisation, community development, health, environment, and sustainability.

3. Develop local programmes and action plans that strengthen community capacity in facing economic and technological change.

4. Attract international collaboration, including opportunities for knowledge exchange and the implementation of social development projects.

The Mayor of Iskandar Puteri also emphasised that this membership is not merely a status, but a long-term commitment.

“The formation of Iskandar Puteri as a lifelong learning city is important to ensure the continuity of knowledge enjoyed by all age groups from various backgrounds. It helps develop potential, increase self-confidence, bridge social gaps, foster understanding and provide clear direction. By offering lifelong learning, it enhances employability, encourages reskilling and upskilling and empowers an innovative, smart community, with commitment and participation from the community and stakeholders.”

In line with this, MBIP will launch several new initiatives, including community digital literacy programmes, a network of community learning centres, and community engagement campaigns that integrate education, volunteerism, and sustainable development.
